Commentary: When we arrive at work each day we have a predetermined mental image that our office area is safe and we sometimes ignore warning signs that something may be amiss. Our topic today is "Guide To Office Safety" and the focus is on some steps to take to preclude office injuries from occurring. When we come to work we need to keep our awareness on alert to ensure that we do not ignore warning signs that could cause injury to ourselves or a fellow employee. D. Hilton, For the Company Safety Council
General: Compared to an industrial work environment, an office can seem like a safe place to work. However, many serious accidents and injuries occur on a regular basis in offices every day. The solution to a work free environment is to first be able to recognize work danger zones and be prepared to deal with your observations before an injury occurs. Let’s spend a few minutes reviewing some precautions that every office employee should observe while performing their duties.
1. 10 Precautions every office employee should observe while in the work area.
a. Keep alert for office hazards and correct or report them right away.
b. Remove tripping hazards, and clean up spills that can lead to falls and injuries.
c. Be careful on stairs and when using step stools or ladders to prevent falls.
d. Eliminate or report fire hazards anywhere in the office.
e. Know where fire extinguishers are located and how to use them.
f. Know what to do in an emergency, and be prepared to evacuate the building safely.
g. Use the proper technique to lift objects safely and prevent back injuries.
h. Avoid musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome by using proper posture while working and by stretching and taking breaks to relax tense muscles.
i. Take precautions to prevent objects from falling down from high places and to prevent collisions with drawers, boxes, furniture, or other objects.
j. Keep your workspace neat and orderly, and clean up after yourself and others to prevent accidents and injuries.
Summary: Preventing workplace accidents is something that we can control. It begins with recognizing where there is probability of danger, and then correcting the problem before some becomes a statistic.
