Imagine waking up every morning and putting on a backpack that weighs 125 pounds. Would it slow you down? Wear out your back and joints? Now think about what a relief it would be to stop carrying it.
Cheryl Fahey, Logistics Coordinator for CalArk Warehouse Services in Little Rock, Arkansas, knows how that would feel. Her organizational skills and ability to juggle the dozens of details she handles at work every day show her intelligence and drive. She still felt frustrated, though, by her desire to be healthy after a lifetime of being overweight.
When she made the decision to try gastric sleeve surgery to manage her health, her insurance agreed to cover the expenses, and CalArk gave her the time off needed to spend a couple of days recovering from the procedure.
Weight loss surgery is a starting point, not a magic solution, though. Cheryl had the mental strength, dedication, and organizational mindset to follow her doctors' directives and make the surgery work.
For starters, she could only have a liquid diet, then pureed foods, then soft foods. After two months, she had worked her way up to a half-cup of solid food per meal. Other self-restrictions include limiting carbohydrates and getting enough protein that her body isn't deprived of nutrients on such a limited food intake.
She's learned and put into practice a lot of tricks to make sure she stays on the right track. She takes several vitamins, eats carefully balanced meals, and does a lot of walking.
Sometimes the hardest part of eating healthy is simply that our culture, especially in the South, connects food with fellowship and meals with spending time together. She says she's blessed to be supported by friends, coworkers, and family, but that she still sometimes has to convince them that she's happy to enjoy chatting while they munch on appetizers or to eat a careful selection from the menu if they'll give her time to find something that won't wreck her progress.
Her hard work and careful self-management, so reflective of what make her a great Logistics Coordinator at CalArk, have really paid off. While she still has a little way to go before meeting her final weight goals, she's proud to say she's lost 125 pounds since her surgery.
We're so delighted that Cheryl has worked this hard to achieve a personal goal, but we're especially glad to have a smart, dedicated person making logistics flow so smoothly for our warehouse services. Congrats on your progress, Cheryl! Thanks for working with us at CalArk.
